Following the success of their debut album “WAW!” and an extensive US and European tour in 2024, the trio returns with “Steep Steps”, a record that captures the raw energy and dynamic interplay honed on stage. The tour, which included sold-out shows in Philadelphia and New York, as well as performances from Girona, Spain, to Reykjavik, Iceland, cemented the group’s vibrant synergy.
The story of Winther / Andersson / Watts began in 2008 when bassist Richard Andersson met world-renowned drummer Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts at a jazz workshop in Denmark. That meeting sparked a musical connection, leading to multiple collaborations. Years later, Andersson and pianist Carl Winther began working together, and soon, they realized their combined energy would form the perfect trio with ‘Tain’.
Recorded in the same session as their first album, “Steep Steps” showcases compositions by Carl Winther, alongside a piece by the legendary McCoy Tyner and a ballad by Tadd Dameron. Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, who recorded with Tyner on “Quartet” (2006), brings his deep connection to the jazz tradition while driving the trio’s sound with his signature intensity.
The trio thrives on energy—hard-hitting swing, fearless improvisation, and a deep musical trust between three internationally acclaimed musicians.
